How significant is your bed to you?
For Napoleon Bonaparte, it was the place of relaxation. “Throw off your worries when you throw off your clothes at night,” he said. The Dalai Lama, agreed, saying, “sleep is the best meditation.” Vladimir Nabokov gave special significance to his bed – by combining it with another of his pleasures – reading. He stated: “knowing you have something good to read before bed is among the most pleasurable of sensations.”
Many people feel that one’s bed should signify love and safety. A place one can feel comfortable, and know that whatever tomorrow brings, one will be better prepared once well rested. It is a place of trust and tranquility.
This is why this bed was the first piece I had built shortly after my divorce. My soul was thirsty for affection, for comfort, for peace of mind; and this bed was designed to be my spiritual sanctuary. And so, I’ve built it to be as low as possible—so that it keeps me grounded. I’ve designed it to accommodate an extra-thick mattress, to give all the needed support and comfort. All the connections are made with industrial, heavy-duty hardware, symbolizing my need to hold myself together.
The oversized headboard, hand made from reclaimed wood, holds within it the memory of the past—holes, scratches, uneven lines, stains, rust from old nails are left all in it. And yet it stands tall and beautiful, as if to say that our scars and failures, our imperfections are an integral part of who we are. Now, we can close our eyes in the safety of our bed – and wake up the next day to create a better tomorrow.
